OOTD: Blush & Black Polkadots

Bomber: Pink Clove (via ASOS) // Mesh Top: ASOS // Bralette: New Look // Belt: Primark // Skirt: ASOS // Shoes: New Look

I'm so into this outfit right now - it's that perfect blend of feminine & sporty, plus it's put-together whilst still being comfy (something that's super important since Summer has me really resenting society's expectations that I will be clothed whenever in public).

I'm totally on board the bomber jacket hype train & finally picked up this Pink Clove number I've been eyeing for a while. In person, it's this beautiful dusky purple & while the scuba fabric is a bit thick for Summer, it does mean it looks a lot more formal than your standard jersey bomber. I think this would look super cute thrown on over a fancy dress in the evening.

This bralette from New Look is surprisingly supportive - probably not enough to survive vigorous dancing or jogging up flights of stairs, but definitely fine for chilling/relaxing/hanging. I also find it much more comfortable to wear than a bra in hot weather, particularly when paired with a lightweight top like this mesh piece from ASOS.

I normally avoid polkadots as they always feel quite childish but because these are larger it gives it a more sporty vibe which I love. This top is quite long which I think could look cool if you were going for a full on athleisure look, but I prefer tying it up into a crop top & securing it with a hair band.

All about that fat girl crop top life.

Review: Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara

Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara

When Too Faced announced they'd be launching a waterproof formula of their holy grail Better Than Sex Mascara back in February the beauty world went wild. I'd never tried the original formula - my super smudgy eyelids mean I avoid non-waterproof mascaras like the plague - but when I spotted the newest version on the Debenhams website I figured why not give it a shot.

The Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara retails at £19 which isn't outrageous but does mean I have pretty high expectations. After all, when I can buy a mascara that makes my lashes look darker & a bit longer on the high street for under a fiver, what's that extra £15 getting me?

Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara

The mascara tube has a light turquoise satin-finish embossed with the Too Faced logo & water droplets scattered across it. It's a cool finish - not something I've seen before - & really hammers home that waterproof message. I also find it makes the applicator slightly easier to grip, although I doubt that's intentional.

The two sections of the packaging fit together well meaning you shouldn't have any issues with this drying out. However, I have noticed that the narrow entrance to the tube gets clogged with excess mascara which you do need to remove, otherwise you'll end up with semi-dry clumps of mascara sticking to the applicator next time you use it. This isn't ideal a) because it's super messy & b) because you're losing product - definitely something that needs to be fixed ASAP.

The wand has a slightly unusual curved, hourglass shape which makes it really easy to use, even on your bottom lashes - apparently it also "unlocks the volumizing formula" - whatever.

When I first opened up the tube I was convinced I'd somehow got a faulty product because the wand looked totally flat, with just a few bristles at either end - Debenhams, why hast thou forsaken me

However, after wiping it off it became clear that the wand was fine, it had just been coated in a thick layer of mascara which hadn't been removed by the neck of the tube. Thankfully this hasn't happened since but it does demonstrate just how thick this formula is.

In terms of the application, I actually think it looks pretty good. The above photos show my lashes product-free & then after just one coat - they looked defined but still natural, & with more coats you can get a bolder look.

However, my main beef with this formula is the stickiness. You can see my inner lashes are already starting to clump together just a few minutes after application & because it doesn't ever really dry this only gets worse throughout the day. It also means that although your mascara won't run - it seems to be pretty rain-proof - it will smudge & transfer, even with minimal contact.

Final Thoughts

I really wanted to love this mascara but it's just not for me & from the reviews online it looks like I'm not the only one. Ultimately, the fact that it's not transfer-proof is a killer & I think you can find products that are just as good, if not better, for a fraction of the price on the high street.

If you've tried either of the Better Than Sex mascaras I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below, & if not, let me know what your favourite mascara is.

Debenhams Homeware Haul

Debenhams Kitchen Homewares

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before on my blog (I definitely have on Twitter) but my fiancé & I are currently in the process of buying our first home together (aaaah!). We're buying a new build so won't be moving until the end of August but that hasn't stopped me from becoming obsessed with homeware & furniture & decoration.

We love the layout of our new home - with its spacious kitchen-diner, cosy living room & three bedrooms - but my major worry is that it'll feel totally characterless, after all it's essentially just a collection of white boxes. The reality is that most of our homeware will be bought from IKEA, & while I love reasonably-priced, mass-produced Swedish-inspired design, there's no denying that it can be a little bland. So, I've committed to spend the months before we move picking up some more personal pieces to make sure the house feels like a home, our home.

Today I thought I'd share some items with you which I picked up in the recent (& still on-going) Debenhams home sale to give you a sense of the style we're going for & maybe even inspire you to give your space a little makeover this Summer.

Joseph Joseph Measuring Cups and Spoons

I've had my eye on this set of measuring spoons & cups from Joseph Joseph for a while now so I couldn't resist picking them up. I love cooking & often use US recipes, so having the cup measurements on there is great & I love the fact that they stack & stand meaning you can have them on the counter rather than rattling about in a drawer.

Denby Azure Coast Bowl Logo
Denby Azure Coast Bowl

Denby are probably best known for super traditional tableware but some of their new ranges are way more adventurous than you'd expect & super stylish. I love the slightly rustic look of this bowl from the Azure Coast line & while there's no way I can afford all our tableware to be Denby I think it looks cute as a stand-alone piece, maybe for snacks or on display somewhere around the house.
Rocha John Rocha Marble Mango Wood Cheese Cake Stand

This Rocha John Rocha marble & mango wood cheese/cake stand is such a frivolous purchase but I love the idea of using it to serve food when people come round for dinner, or having it on display in the kitchen.

Royal Doulton Fable Plate

I'm not normally fan of bold prints but this Royal Doulton plate won my heart instantly. I love the Scandinavian feel of the design & it has sentimental value too as my late Grandmother worked for Royal Doulton as a painter for almost all her life - she would have hated the fact this was machine rather than hand printed but it still feels like a nice tribute to her.

Jasper Conran Copper Juicer

Like with the measuring cup set, I picked up this copper juicer because it's both practical & aesthetically pleasing. Our current juicer is super small, so I like that this one is easily large enough to hold the juice for a lemon drizzle cake or lime cheesecake, plus it'll look great contrasted against our dark grey counters.

I'll definitely be picking up a few more pieces before we finally move so let me know if you'd like to see another of these posts. I'd also be keen to know your favourite homeware stores - leave me a comment below.

Review: MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade

Velveteen Femme MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Lightscapade

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm still 110% on the highlighter hype train so when I hit pan on my beloved Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone I immediately started looking around for a replacement. Enter MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade (£24).

I feel like MAC has fallen out of favour in the beauty blogging community, largely because a lot of indie brands have entered the market at the same price point with way more innovative products, which can only be a good thing for the industry. That being said, I still think MAC has a lot of solid products & Lightscapade is right up there.

Velveteen Femme MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Lightscapade

Like almost all of MAC's powders, Lightscapade comes in a classic, matte black compact, although somewhat unusually the Mineralize Skinfinishes feature a clear window so you can easily see the shade. I'm a big fan of sleek & minimal packaging but the rubberised finish means this looks grubby almost instantly, something which bugs me way more than it should.

In the pan, Lightscapade looks stunning with a marbled finish combining pink, peach, blue & yellow. Obviously it's a bit gimmicky, but as someone who loves the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blushes this really appeals to me.

On the skin, the colours all combine to create a beautiful pearl finish. As you can see in the swatches above Lightscapade is fairly neutral although it does lean a little pink. It's not particularly glittery & instead has the same natural glow of the far more expensive Becca highlighter.

I don't think Lightscapade is anything massively revolutionary but I've reached for it almost every day since purchasing & if you're someone who thought only high-end highlighters could achieve that light-from-within glow then it's definitely worth checking out.
